🇪🇸 Mi visita a Savannah, Georgia: encanto histórico, recorridos y rincones inolvidables🌸

Savannah es una de mis ciudades favoritas de Estados Unidos, y cada paso por sus plazas, su río, sus parques y sus viejos edificios me hizo enamorarme un poco más. Te cuento lo más destacado de lo que viví, por si estás pensando visitarla también:

El Old Town Trolley Tour🚋

Hice el tour con Old Town Trolley, que es ese tranvía/trolley que recorre la parte histórica de la ciudad. Su recorrido comienza en el Visitor Center, en 301 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.   También hay otro punto de bienvenida en 214 West Boundary Street (el Welcome Center) que sirve como parada del trolley.   El tour no dura exactamente una hora, es de aproximadamente 90 minutos si hacés todo el circuito completo, con paradas posibles para subir y bajar según lo que quieras ver.   Es ideal si querés conocer lo esencial, y también se puede explorar gran parte de la ciudad caminando.

Cómo llegar y dónde hospedarte

Se puede llegar en auto desde ciudades cercanas: Atlanta es una de las opciones grandes, y también Charleston, Carolina del Sur, está relativamente cerca si querés un viaje más largo (pero todo vale la pena). En cuanto al alojamiento, vi que hay hoteles boutique muy lindos dentro del distrito histórico y también opciones afuera, por si preferís algo más tranquilo o con mejor precio.

Plazas, parques y arquitectura🌳🌲

Savannah tiene muchas plazas con muchos árboles, bancos donde sentarse y mirar el paisaje, esas plazas pequeñas que le dan tanto encanto a la ciudad. Una de ellas es Chippewa Square, que tiene el banco de Forrest Gump, famoso porque en la película el protagonista se sienta ahí.

El parque más grande y memorable es Forsyth Park, con una fuente súper característica. La fuente fue instalada en 1858, fue fabricada por Janes, Beebe & Company, una fundición en el Bronx, Nueva York. Su diseño se inspira en trabajos del escultor francés Michel Lienard.   Dentro del parque hay zonas de juegos infantiles, senderos sombreados, espacios donde se hacen actividades educativas, espectáculos al aire libre, y en verano se convierte en refugio fresco gracias a la vegetación y los grandes árboles.

Río, almacenes históricos y ambiente del Riverfront

La parte sobre la costanera del río (River Street) es preciosa: tiene edificios antiguos que se usaban como almacenes de algodón y mercancías varias, construidos en piedra de lastre o materiales resistentes, con ese estilo portuario que te transporta a otra época. Un ejemplo es el William Taylor Stores, que es uno de los almacenes más antiguos sobre River Street, usado para guardar algodón y mercaderías.   Muchos de esos viejos almacenes hoy albergan restaurantes, tiendas de souvenirs, galerías, y también un negocio de dulces (“candy shop”/museum o tienda especializada) que me encantó: recorrerlos da gusto por la variedad y el ambiente. También en la orilla del río hay un barco como los que navegaban el Mississippi que siempre está amarrado. Es una foto imperdible.

🇬🇧 My Visit to Savannah, Georgia: Historic Charm, Tours and Unforgettable Corners🌸

Savannah is one of my favorite cities in the United States, and every step through its squares, riverfront, parks and old buildings made me fall in love a little more. Here’s what stood out the most from my visit — in case you’re planning to go too:

The Old Town Trolley Tour🚋

I took the Old Town Trolley Tour — that charming trolley that goes through the city’s historic district. The route starts at the Visitor Center at 301 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, and there’s also another welcome point at 214 West Boundary Street (the Welcome Center), which serves as a trolley stop. The tour lasts about 90 minutes if you do the full loop, with the option to hop on and off depending on what you want to explore. It’s perfect to see the essentials, and you can also walk around much of the city on foot.

Getting There and Where to Stay

You can reach Savannah by car from nearby cities — Atlanta is a major option, and Charleston, South Carolina, is also relatively close if you’re up for a longer drive (but totally worth it). When it comes to accommodation, I noticed lovely boutique hotels inside the historic district, as well as quieter and more affordable options outside.

Squares, Parks and Architecture🌳🌲

Savannah has many small squares filled with trees, benches and peaceful corners — they give the city its unique charm. One of them is Chippewa Square, home to the famous Forrest Gump bench, where the main character sits in the movie.

The largest and most memorable park is Forsyth Park, known for its beautiful fountain. The fountain was installed in 1858 and was manufactured by Janes, Beebe & Company, a foundry in the Bronx, New York. Its design was inspired by works of the French sculptor Michel Lienard.

Inside the park, there are playgrounds, shaded paths, areas for community events, open-air performances, and in summer it becomes a refreshing green haven thanks to the trees and lush vegetation.

Riverfront, Historic Warehouses and Atmosphere

The River Street area along the riverfront is stunning: old buildings once used as cotton warehouses and other storage spaces line the street, built with ballast stone and solid materials that still reflect Savannah’s port past. One example is the William Taylor Stores, one of the oldest warehouses on River Street, originally used for cotton and other goods.

Many of these historic warehouses now host restaurants, souvenir shops, art galleries and even a lovely candy shop/museum I loved exploring — full of treats and character.

Along the river, there’s also a paddlewheel boat like those that once sailed the Mississippi, usually docked there — it’s an iconic photo spot.

🇩🇪 Mein Besuch in Savannah, Georgia: Historischer Charme, Rundfahrten und unvergessliche Ecken🌸

Savannah ist eine meiner Lieblingsstädte in den USA, und bei jedem Schritt durch ihre Plätze, am Flussufer, in den Parks und zwischen den alten Gebäuden habe ich mich ein bisschen mehr in sie verliebt. Hier erzähle ich dir von den schönsten Eindrücken – falls du auch planst, sie zu besuchen:

Die Old Town Trolley Tour🚋

Ich machte die Tour mit Old Town Trolley, einem nostalgischen Straßenbahnwagen, der durch das historische Viertel der Stadt fährt. Die Route beginnt am Visitor Center in der 301 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, und es gibt auch einen weiteren Willkommenspunkt in der 214 West Boundary Street (das Welcome Center), der ebenfalls als Haltestelle dient. Die komplette Rundfahrt dauert etwa 90 Minuten, und man kann an verschiedenen Haltestellen ein- und aussteigen – perfekt, um die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten kennenzulernen. Vieles lässt sich aber auch wunderbar zu Fuß erkunden.

Anreise und Unterkunft

Nach Savannah kann man gut mit dem Auto fahren – zum Beispiel von Atlanta oder auch von Charleston (South Carolina), was sich für einen längeren, aber sehr lohnenswerten Ausflug anbietet.

Bei der Unterkunft fand ich viele hübsche Boutique-Hotels im historischen Viertel, aber auch ruhigere und günstigere Optionen außerhalb der Altstadt.

Savannah ist bekannt für ihre vielen kleinen Plätze – grüne Oasen mit Bäumen, Bänken und viel Atmosphäre. Einer davon ist der Chippewa Square, bekannt aus dem Film Forrest Gump, wo die berühmte Bankszene spielt.

Der größte und eindrucksvollste Park ist der Forsyth Park, dessen markanter Brunnen sofort ins Auge fällt. Er wurde 1858 installiert und von der Gießerei Janes, Beebe & Company im Bronx (New York) gefertigt. Sein Design wurde von Werken des französischen Bildhauers Michel Lienard inspiriert.

Im Park gibt es Spielplätze, schattige Wege, Flächen für Veranstaltungen und Freiluftkonzerte – und im Sommer ist er ein kühler Rückzugsort voller Bäume und Grün.

Flussufer, alte Lagerhäuser und Atmosphäre

Die River Street am Ufer des Savannah River ist einfach wunderschön: Alte Gebäude, einst Baumwolllagerhäuser, prägen das Bild. Sie wurden aus Ballaststeinen und anderen robusten Materialien gebaut und erinnern an Savannahs Zeit als Hafenstadt. Ein Beispiel ist das William Taylor Stores, eines der ältesten Lagerhäuser an der River Street, das ursprünglich zur Aufbewahrung von Baumwolle und Waren diente.

Heute befinden sich in diesen historischen Gebäuden Restaurants, Souvenirläden, Galerien und sogar ein Süßigkeitenladen/Museum, das ich besonders mochte.

Am Fluss liegt außerdem ein Raddampfer, wie man sie vom Mississippi kennt – ein wunderbares Fotomotiv.
