🇪🇸 Un paseo infaltable desde Miami: Key West, en los cayos de la Florida

Un paseo que nunca me pierdo cuando visito Miami es ir a Key West, en los cayos de la Florida.

Key West es el punto más al sur de Estados Unidos contiguos: a unas 90 millas de Cuba, un detalle que simboliza su cercanía caribeña. Allí se encuentra el famoso Southernmost Point Buoy, ese gran mojón pintado con los colores rojo, negro y amarillo que marca el extremo sur continental del país. Aunque está en reparaciones, hay una réplica para fotos en el Duval Street Pocket Park.

Después caminé por Duval Street, la calle central que bulle de vida, con bares clásicos como Sloppy Joe’s, fundado en 1937, además de galerías de arte, tiendas, un Hard Rock y casas tradicionales rodeadas de vegetación tropical y colores vivos. Al atardecer, la gente se reúne en Mallory Square para el famoso “Sunset Celebration”: artesanos, música callejera y food trucks una o dos horas antes de la puesta del sol.

Otra parada imperdible es la casa de Ernest Hemingway, hoy museo: abre todos los días de 9 a.m. a 5 p.m., con tours guiados cada 15 minutos desde las 9:15 a.m., sin necesidad de reserva. En sus jardines viven unos 60 gatos polidáctilos (con seis dedos), descendientes del gato que Hemingway recibió como regalo.

También visité la casita donde nació Pan Am, en la esquina de Whitehead y Greene: fue la primera oficina de la aerolínea y hoy es un bar con decoración aeronáutica, con algunos objetos de Pan Am en exhibición y ambiente tematizado.

Key West también cuenta con playas hermosas y una amplia oferta de alojamiento, desde hoteles caros hasta opciones más económicas, y un ambiente nocturno vibrante.

Si buscás algo más tranquilo, podés alojarte en Isla Morada, a solo unos cayos de distancia. Toda la zona está conectada por los famosos puentes de la Overseas Highway, que cruzan el mar entre islitas: un trayecto espectacular en cualquier recorrido por los Cayos de la Florida.

An outing I never skip when visiting Miami is heading down to Key West, in the Florida Keys.

Key West is the southernmost point of the continental United States — about 90 miles from Cuba, a symbol of its Caribbean proximity. There’s a famous Southernmost Point Buoy, that big red, black, and yellow marker indicating the southern tip. It’s currently under repair, but there’s a replica in Duval Street Pocket Park for photos.

Then I walked along Duval Street, the lively main road dotted with classic bars like Sloppy Joe’s (founded in 1937), art galleries, shops, a Hard Rock café, and charming houses painted in vibrant colors and wrapped in tropical greenery. At sunset, people gather at Mallory Square for the famous “Sunset Celebration,” with street performers, crafts, and food trucks starting about two hours before dusk.

Another must-see is Ernest Hemingway’s house, now a museum: open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with guided tours every 15 minutes beginning at 9:15 a.m., no reservation required. The grounds are home to about 60 polydactyl cats (six-toed), descendants of Hemingway’s original pet.

I also stopped by the little house where Pan Am began — at the corner of Whitehead and Greene — the airline’s original office. Today it’s a bar with aviation-themed décor, with some Pan Am artifacts on display.

Key West also offers beautiful beaches and a wide range of accommodations — from upscale hotels to budget options — plus a vibrant nightlife.

For a quieter stay, you might consider Islamorada, just a few keys away. The whole area is connected by the iconic bridges of the Overseas Highway, cutting across the water from key to key — a stunning drive through the Florida Keys.

Ein Ausflug, den ich bei jedem Besuch in Miami nicht auslasse, ist Key West in den Florida Keys.

Key West ist der südlichste Punkt der zusammenhängenden USA — etwa 90 Meilen von Kuba entfernt, ein Symbol seiner karibischen Nähe. Dort steht der berühmte Southernmost Point Buoy, jener große rot-schwarz-gelbe Marker, der den südlichsten Zipfel markiert. Er ist momentan in Reparatur, aber im Duval Street Pocket Park steht eine Nachbildung für Fotos bereit.

Dann schlenderte ich entlang der Duval Street, der lebhaften Hauptstraße mit klassischen Bars wie Sloppy Joe’s (gegründet 1937), Kunstgalerien, Läden, einem Hard Rock Café und charmanten Häusern in bunten Farben umgeben von tropischem Grün. Zum Sonnenuntergang versammeln sich die Leute am Mallory Square zur berühmten „Sunset Celebration“ mit Straßenkünstlern, Kunsthandwerk und Food Trucks, etwa zwei Stunden vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit.

Ein weiteres Highlight ist das Hemingway-Haus, heute ein Museum: täglich geöffnet von 9 bis 17 Uhr, mit geführten Touren alle 15 Minuten ab 9:15 Uhr, ohne Reservierung. Auf dem Anwesen leben etwa 60 polydaktyle Katzen (mit sechs Zehen), Nachfahren von Hemingways ursprünglicher Haustierkatz.

Ich besuchte auch das kleine Häuschen an der Ecke Whitehead und Greene, wo Pan Am begann — das war die erste Dienststelle der Fluggesellschaft. Heute befindet es sich in einem Bar-Restaurant mit Luftfahrt-Dekor und einigen Pan-Am-Artefakten.

Key West bietet außerdem wunderschöne Strände und eine breite Auswahl an Unterkünften — von luxuriösen Hotels bis zu günstigen Optionen — sowie ein lebendiges Nachtleben.

Für einen ruhigeren Aufenthalt könntest du auch in Islamorada übernachten, nur wenige Keys entfernt. Die gesamte Region ist durch die berühmten Brücken der Overseas Highway verbunden, die von Inselchen zu Inselchen über das Wasser führen — eine beeindruckende Route durch die Florida Keys.
